' A man of humanity is one who , in seeking to establish himself, finds a foothold for others and who, desiring attainment for himself, helps others to attain . ' ' Confucius

With endless duties awaiting her as she arrives to C.H.S. long before the 8 o'clock bells ring everyday.

This devoted woman has become an intergal part of our school system.

Whether she's at the typewriter, keeping records, taking messages, making calls, signing absent slips or tardy passes .

Her excellent organization and prompt efficiency shines through in whatever task she under takes .

Not only our school secretary, she has become a real friend to the student body of our high school .

Therefore, we the staff of the 1977- 78 Rayder Yearbook do hereby dedicate this publication to Mrs . Joanne Grubaugh .

Undefeated Rayders

The year is 1977. The year of the Rayders. This year marks the first time since 1958 that the Charlevoix football team has had an undefeated season.

Three times this fall the Rayders looked like they would be beaten, but with determination and superb coaching, the Rayders achieved victory.

Special thanks go to head coach Don Carey and his staff for conditioning a group of fine young men who gave their all for the Rayders .

Congratulations Rayders !

/. V. Football

This year the Charlevoix JV's punted, passed, kicked, tackled and ran their way to a 5-2-2 season. Although Coach Evans ran tough practices, the team endured them and, as a result, enjoyed those five wins.

Thanks to Coach Evans for bringing the team along . Just wait until next year when these guys are varsity !

Freshmen Football

It was a rough and tough season for the players of the freshmen football team.

Injuries, close games, fumbles, interceptions and penalties decided the outcome of many games. Improvement during the season was steady. The boys played better and enthusiasm remained. They're expected to do considerably better next year , because they have the ability and have developed as a team .

This year the C.H.S. golf team, coached by Barry Anderson, had another successful season. They took the 1977 Michigan Huron Shores Conference Championship and placed 2nd in the Regional Competition which qualified them for the State Finals . This year's Rayder cross country team started their season in early August and kept up their increasingly hard practices until the first meet. From the first meet on the team showed their abilities, winning all but on dual and going into the conference as a close favorite with three other schools. The conference meet was expected to be very close but the team had different ideas and ran away with the first Charlevoix title by twenty points . They later went on to win both the E . R . and Gaylord invitationals . The Rayder team then traveled to Regionals where they placed second , which qualified them for State . This was the best cross country team ever in Charlevoix , but with the first five runners coming back, Coach Spieles can't wait until next year.

Varsity Basketball

Now that the sounds of punt , pass , and kick have faded away , the sounds of tennis shoes running up and down the court have started in the gym. This is the beginning of the Rayder Basketball season.

No longer will they complain about the wheather outside but the atmosphere inside and on the court . The biggest victory this year for coach Moyer is when Charlevoix beat Petoskey, Moyer' s former alma mater. Through the season Coach Moyer would encourage his team with such words as ' 'Men we are going to win a few and lose a few . ' ' With only a few players leaving it looks like the Rayders will be bouncing back to a better season next year.

The season started out for them in the summer when the five of the new fall cheerleaders spent a week at a camp held by the Dynamic Cheerleaders Association at Northwood Institute in Midland . The main intention of the camp was to teach the girls new cheers and spirit ideas, but the football camp held at the same time sure lead to a lot of distractions ! And when the 1977-78 Football season began all the hard work and time had really paid off. The best part of it all was cheering on a Number 1 and undefeated team to all their victories .

Not only was the team great, but the weather also cooperated, because it didn't even snow on the last game !

This is the first year that Coach Probert has lead the team into the top ten bracket. It is also the first time he has had a wrestler achieve one hundred wins in a career, with another teammate following close pursuit. Throughout the year with alot of determined work Probert came out with five men traveling to state competition, which is also an achievement in Charlevoix's history.

The girls basketball

This year the varsity team wasn't so successful , but they did a really good job.

It was a team and everyone worked like it was, but somehow when they came out on the floor something was not working .

They lost many games by only a few points , so somehow the ' ' LUCK ' ' was missing .

The girls stayed together; when they won, there were big celebrations and when they were defeated, they tried to cheer each other up.

McDonald's seemed to pacify the team after every away game.

If you look at the record 4- 10, you would think it was a bad team, but the team spirit and determination was abundant and after all, that's what makes our team so great !

The girls on the J.V. team this year were just super ! There must have been some magic on the floor with the record 15-1 . Seems like they get better every year. It was a very good team, with good teamwork, and together with a good coach everything worked out great. I hope next year they will work even harder, to be an unbeaten team.

The C.H.S. Ski Team returned home this year with the memories of all their humorous times , in place of the trophies that should had been won. The girls demonstrated their talent at the end of the season when they placed 3rd at the Conference meet. The guys were behind them with the fourth place . Next year, both teams will have to give fourth all their ability to go get ' em ! !

Baseball

n

if

For awhile in late winter, 1978, it seemed that Charlevoix High School would not be blessed with baseball. To make a long story short, after a short tussle with the school board, they were finally able to get it.

Selling garbage bags for funds was something the whole team did without complaining. They raised all the money they could get from this effort and also from many local business donations . They are hoping that after a tie for second place , the school board will approve baseball for the second season.

Seniors, Greg Krueger, Jimmy Elzinga, and Woody Pearson were the Co-MVP's for the year. Greg and Jimmy's hitting and fielding and especially Woody's pitching were outstanding.

One thing they do need more of besides money, is some added support from the students. They had some good gatherings last year, but the coaches, Mr. Spieles and Mr. Gowell would like to see more people out to support the Red Rayder Baseball Team ! ! !

Homecoming 77

Homecoming is a time to renew our loyalty and spirit in our school . It is a time when past graduates return and they too renew a loyalty and spirit in our school . For many schools homecoming is just another day or another game. But at Charlevoix it is different. There are few schools who can boast of the talents of their students like Charlevoix can. Our football team each year sends players into the college ranks. This year will be no exception. Our band is the best in the North. Our forensics and debate teams are state renouned. Other activities such as wrestling, basketball, track in both girls and boys are highly respected in Class C circles . But most of all , in the midst of students calling each other burn-outs, band fairies, jocks, air heads and turkeys; the paperwork of late slips, permits to leave the building , loss of credit deficiency reports and reports of absence ; the academic prestige of our school is impeccable. With the hard work of students and teachers, Charlevoix students are among the most successful in all academic endeavors. For all these things, you as a student body should be proud , no matter how bad or how well you are doing in school . To be part of this fine school is an honor. So come out tonight and support your school and your team. Make an effort to become more involved. As we say on the football team - let's all go out and get the job done.

Homecoming 77

^

Homecoming '77 started two weeks before the actual festivities with the announcement of the Homecoming candidates. For the next two weeks the student body had to put up with five cheerful seniors; Peggy, Terri, Kim, Mary, and Karen. In all that excitement, classes began to get the Homecoming Spirit. Floats began to take shape in various places in town.

Homecoming evening finally arrived ! All the floats made it in one piece to the school, the queen and court arrived on time , the cheerleaders were psyched up for a victory and the marching band was in perfect step. Halftime began with the junior class once again taking first place in the float competition with their replica of 1 'King Kong' ' . The seniors were behind them with their 1 'House of Tiaria' ' . The freshman showed their ability to beat someone by placing third ahead of the booby prized sophomores. After the crowning of queen Peggy, halftime ended to the tune of Evergreen. The evening celebration went onto the elementary school for the traditional Homecoming dance .

Organization and cooperation were a major part of our Homecoming '77. We, the student body of C.H.S. , will never forget this wonderful gathering .

The Spirit Machine

Often during the football season at 7:00 a.m. sleepyheaded people could be seen stumbling out to the football field. No, it wasn't the Mighty Rayders, but instead it was the Spirit Machine . Yes , the Red Rayder Marching Band could be seen practicing mornings and evenings for the Friday night half-time performances. The 80 piece marching band was spear-headed by the newly formed color guard of four rifles and twelve flags , the golden girl and drum major. Mr. Stutzman, Mr. Riley and members of the special corps all contributed to the making of the shows . Some of the most memorable events of the 1977 marching season were attending the Harbor Springs Marching Band Festival , practicing on Halloween in the gym wearing costumes , and watching D.B. 's and J.L. 's pants fall down while performing a half-time show.

Symphony Band

' 'How many times have I told you not to play your horns with gum in your mouth? ! ' This can be heard daily during third hour band rehersals . Constant reminders like this are what helped the band to become the best band in Charlevoix history.

Band members are set apart from the rest of the student body , being involved in numerous activities with the band . Opportunities for Honors Band , Solo and Ensemble , City Band , Pep Band , and Jazz Band are available for the young musicians. A certain amount of sacrifice is involved also, such as seven a.m. (that's in the morning) rehersals for the State Band and Orchestra Festival and individual practices after school . / Hear A Voice

The 1977-78 chorus did a fine job this year. They wound up one of their best preforming years ever even though the students had a hang up about when to come in, both at the beginning of class and during the music.

Despite the basses tremendous effort, the sapranos and altos still outpower them. While Mr. Stargardt was concentrating on producing an open tone the tenors were directing their vocal talents in conversation.

Debate

Earning awards entitled superior debators meant working hard , playing fair and winning . We all truly worked as one this year. Together we won, together we lost, and that togetherness made a wholeness that brought us to victory in many tournaments and took us to State Finals.

Many of us will graduate this year but the hope is that the bonds which were formed will never be broken . For the new debators all that can be said is that hopefully they will gain as -much from belonging to the team as those in past years, and that they will bring all the respect deserved to Charlevoix High School .

62

63

One Act

Drama competition of 1978 may not have seen C.H.S. reach State Finals but it certainly won't be a year the team will soon forget. It all started with districts and the biggest snowstorm in years. Four days late and beating Traverse City for first place they moved on to regionals. But the storm wasn't going to be the last disaster of the season. The tried and true Rayder bus decided it was tired too. Remember Mother Superior, alias Laurie Helms, flagging down help, the poor State Police who thought we were Charlevoix Catholic High School, frozen feet, flares that wouldn't light, a night in Pinconning, bowling and 5:30 a.m. finally home.

It wasn't all a disaster though. Districts saw Laurie Helms, Ann Watson, Chris Pidek, Louise Caldwell and Tammy Helms receive awards for their portrayal of the five nuns . Districts and Regionals also brought top honors of superior to Geoff Nelson for his portrayal of the folksinger plus his arrangement and performance of all music for the show.

All in all the season wasn't too bad. It will hold fond memories that the actors and crew won't forget for years to come.

C.H.S. Forensics

Forensics , I always thought that had to do with studying dead people. After a few years in the program though, I've figured out that it's really speaking. Speaking in front of people 1 can do that I said , all it takes is guts , I got lots of those, not much of sense, but sense isn't listed as a requirement for the activity .

District Qualifiers L. Dusdal, C. Boss, S. Hufford, J. Grooters, S. Barnes, S. Cook, C. Sizemore, W. Wright, A. Watson, K. Matthews, B. Avery, P. Sutherland, J. Boal, L. Blanchard, D. Tollas, M.

The third annual Winter Homecoming got off to a great start this year with good participation in spirit week and the building of the ice sculptures. The Juniors won both with their unending spirit and alligator, pig, rabbit combination .

Queen Sue Hodge and King Jim Elzinga lent a touch of royalty to the festivities. Their court consisted of Anne Henderson and Pat Klooster, Louise Caldwell and Matt Stangis , Jacque Mabee and Tom Left, and Carole Osterberg and Joe Left.

The Rayder team had a tough fight to win the game against Petoskey, but they managed to pull it off in the last seconds .

Another Winter Homecoming has past, but we still have our memories .

Student Council

CHS's Flashers

The C.H.S. Flashers had another year slip them by. Trying to get everything of importance into words and in reasonable order is not as easy as it may sound. However , they pulled through . Having a few machines break down, or losing all the scissors at once did not slow the Flashers down to much .

The Never Ending Rush

The Production of the Red Rayder Yearbook started Late this year, as usual. The yearbook staff encountered the problems of not enough participation , not enough pictures , and the merchants not buying full page ads ! By the mass production of seventy pages in two weeks the yearbook was finally finished.

Awards Assembly

Now is the time to hand out the awards to the students that worked so hard and deserve them. Besides keeping up with band, sports, forensics and various clubs, they were still able to maintain their academic classes this past year. The student body appreciates their time, hard-work and skills, for many of them have presented their abilities and great leadership.

At the awards assembly many more students received awards this year compared to last. This happened because awards were given out to seniors on down to freshmen for having a 3 . 5 average or better for the semester. Keep up the good work! !

The Young And The Restless

The memories of that night will not be forgotten by many a couple . As the rain fell outside , the spirits rose inside . The music by ' 'Cyprus' ' swept around the room and Stafford's Bay View Inn became the castle of times to cherish. That night of May 13, 1978 was a night that left the past behind, the future for tomorrow, and the living for now . The scent of the flowers intertwined with the trickling of the punch fountain and left its scent on the minds of those who were there , to be smelled again in the days of the future when we want to remember the times when we were the young and the restless .

Gone dreams of the past;

gone with a love that moved too fast;

gone, bright, shiny days;

gone , in a young and restless haze .

Why did we love then run away? so little time , so much left to say, and now it's gone.

Young and restless friend ,

you'll never pass this way again;

so drink the summer wine ,

reach for the stars while you have time .

Your restless dreams will lead the way ;

so dream your dreams and live for each day

while you are young.

Graduation

Despite a chaotic Thursday afternoon practice consisting of one hundred and forty seven rowdy seniors and a deffective cassette, Sunday, June 11, became a reality to the class of '78. The usual sweating and tears of happiness were evident during those few important hours . Yet tradition was broken when the senior selection turned out to be loud and cheerful. The crowd was awakened as the sounds of drums and electric guitars filled the air. Then the mystical ' 'senior year' ' was all over as each graduate stepped down from the platform. In each person's hand a diploma was displayed and a maroon and white tassle was quickly flipped from right to left . Grade , Middle and High School years were all left behind them. It was now the time for the Class of '78 to meet the challenges of the world .

I shall pass through this world but once , If therefore , there be any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do , let me do it now ... for I shall not pass this way again .

In September of "74' ' , we first arrived at C.H.S. as freshmen. We were taught to keep our mouths closed in fear of initiation. At homecoming our float won first place , to the surprise of the juniors .

As sophomores we ordered school rings and the day we got them we went around to show them off to the freshmen . Then there was our successful magazine sale .

A booth in the part at Venetian , started our junior year which included such events as Term Papers and tests for College .

And time rolled on . . .

It was a long thirteen years but we finally became seniors . First here then suddenly gone , our senior year was filled with days of many memories some good and others bad .

And as we left on June 11th, we took our thoughts of our fantastic NUMBER 1 football team, sitting on the heater, ordering caps, gowns and announcements, planning our senior trip to Cedar Point , a rainy senior skip day , slave sale , our professional hall walkers , prom, and last, but most important - GRADUATION! ! !

We as a class have accomplished many important goals -yet
